Wheeler Dealer: Furrier Hana K drives expansion with alternative outlets and masculine designs
By William Kissel

The newest store in Chicago furrier Hana K's rapidly growing signature chain is not only the smallest, it is also the most unconventional. The tiny boutique is sandwiched between a gold neoclassical pillar and an elaborate staircase railing on the mezzanine of Chicago's Bentley Gold Coast auto dealership. Although the setting is unusual, in this particular auto showroom, Hana K is not out of place. It shares the space with prestige jewelry, watch, and leather brands, including Franck Muller, Zenith, Hublot, Fred, Montblanc, Jacob & Co., Jorg Hysek, and Jean Marcel.

This is not the start of a new retailing trend, says Hana K Marketing Director Mladen Djankovich. It is simply one of many opportunities the 25-year-old company is exploring to broaden the reach of its opulent furs and raincoats. "Hana K is always going to have its more conservative shearlings and furs, but we are doing a lot more with trendier, sexier raincoats and men's cashmeres, and we needed a different kind of outlet to show them," he explains.

Setting Style: Hana Lang
By Riki Altman

Hana Lang, one of Chicago’s most stylish women, knows fashion. As the designer of Hana K coats and owner of boutiques in Glencoe and Chicago, Hana spends most days helping customers look and feel beautiful.

Her background influenced her personal style and design sense. She has fond memories of watching her mother cut and sew clothes on a manual sewing machine at home. As a young adult, she graduated from architecture school and then thought about medical school. But she soon found that designing contemporary and functional fur and shearling coats was her true calling.

Today, Hana and her husband, Pierre, have two teenaged daughters and an 8-year-old son. And she still finds time to keep her look fresh and polished.

Featherweight Fur

Now that winter is finally upon us, I am happy to report that men's and women's luxury outerwear retailer Hana K has opened two stores in the Chicago area: one at 72 E. Oak St. in Chicago and the other in Glencoe.

Designer Hana Lang has developed a strong international following thanks to her featherweight shearlings, cozy cashmeres and elegant reversible, micro-fiber raincoats (which she will gladly - and meticulously - line or trim with your favorite fur). She started her company in 1979 as a wholesale business, selling to the fur departments of some of the finest stores in the country. And now, 20 years later, with shearlings that come in 35 different colors, the Hana K line remains many Chicagoans' favorite protection from temptuous weather.
